The winds of change are blowing in Beantown. Scott Brown an independent thinking Republican was voted into the seat of Ted Kennedy. And while Teddy is most famous for killing Mary Jo Kopechne, his brothers were both fabled cigar smokers. So in honor of the Camelot era finally coming to an end we lit a smoke for the late great JFK and the bay states newest hope Senator Brown.

It wasn’t all politics though, there were plenty of discussions about the old and the new, cigars, cocktails, and as always fine living abounds at stogie night.

Sometimes it seems like life has a way of stealing all your time. I guess that is one of the primary reasons we host Stogie Night, because the older you get the further away you are from the days you could call your pals up at 10:30 on a Friday night and be having a drink and smoke by 11.

November 2009 Stogie Night

Making time for yourself and your friends is imperative. Sharing those times with you is my pleasure and also a gentle nudge for you to do the same. So please check out our photo page as I have updated photos (supplied by Jak Jericho) from February, April and November of last year. Yes I know we are slackers. But, next Stogie Night is January 24th 2010 a mere 1 week away and I guarantee those photos will be up the following week. Also in the works (I’ve already seen drafts) are a few killer posts.

In other big news some of our members have extended an invitation to join a newly formed online cocktail enthusiasts group. More details on that to follow.

As an early fall cookout was winding down, I ushered some of my partaking guests up to my deck where I premiered a newly acquired box of 25 H Upmann 1844 Vintage Cameroon Robusto cigars. These were given by a generous local source that requested anonymity, but to which much thanks was given and with the promise of a full report.

Authenticity Seal

H Upmann 1844 Vintage Cameroon Robusto

These cigars are produced in the Dominican Republic using Dominican, Nicaraguan, & Peruvian Filler Tobaccos, a Nicaraguan Binder, and a rarely seen 1st Grade African Cameroon Wrapper, which heralds back to the heyday of H Upmann, before the cigar boon of the early nineties, after which recipes seemed cheaper, and quality harder to determine. The Robustos measure a five inch length and a Ring Gauge of 52. Cigar Insiders gave these Upmann’s an average score of 91.

In Hand

They come wonderfully boxed with thin cedar dividers, one on top and one between the two hearty layers of individually plastic-wrapped cigars. Each one has three paper label wrappers and a cedar sleeve, which when used to light these beauties, gave the first couple of puffs that great cedar flavor.

There is a noticeably fine draw from the very first light and it gave off a fog-like gray smoke that wasn’t shy. The Cameroon stayed lit a long time, and had a slow, almost deliberate and even burn, with an ash that would put Andy Capp’s to shame.

About mid way through, the strong taste and aroma of fine hardwood and nuts was evident. The taste went well beyond the “medium-bodied” characterization given by other reviewers. You are smoking a Cigar Smoker’s cigar here. This is not an entry level rope, and should not to be confused with H Upmann’s more popular, lighter, smoother offerings. Overall, it was an enjoyable, fragrant, and tasty smoking experience, however I did find myself letting it rest in the ashtray a little longer than some of my favorites. The tail-end of the burn, somewhat mercifully relented to a softer faint mocha finish.

We paired the H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon Robustos with a rare yet equally tasty liqueur from Hungary called ZWACK. This herb based beverage has been made in Budapest for nearly 220 years. It is dark brown in color not unlike Germany’s Jagermeister, but it is less pungent and “mediciney” on the tongue. It tastes more along the line of an original Riccola throat lozenge. Zwack is sweet and has a pleasant burnt caramel flavor, that nicely offset the bold presence of the Cameroon.

Zwack

My guests were mixed as to their opinions on the cigar choice. I found that two; Joe and his Dad, whom both dabble more frequently in the tobacco realm, tended to like the Upmann’s more than did the other two guys, who did not smoke nearly as often. One of the latter I must admit, looked a bit green halfway through. The voting was unanimous though about the drink choice. Everyone loved the Zwack, having never tried it before, save yours truly. And all did agree that the pairing of the two was very apropos.

Cameroon Crew

Stay tuned for more cigar/beverage pairings and reviews from Jak Jericho, right here at StogieNight.com, where it’s always the right time for a fine cigar, and every night is Stogie Night. For more photos from this Smoke Sample check out our flickr page.

Stogie Night on November 30th, 2008 was held at the famed Stanzi Di Sigari on Hanover Street in the North End of Boston. This is the standby venue for the Stogie Night Crew, especially in the cooler months. This night was to be noteworthy for the regular attendees of Stogie Night because the City of Boston was on the cusp of passing a by-law that would eliminate the last bastions of smoking freedom: “The Cigar Bar”.

With only three or four cigar bars left in the area, now facing final elimination, this was to be the last puff in our favorite former “speak-easy”. The men enjoyed the typical great service as always, which served up a bevy of top-shelf cocktails and single-malt scotches. The cigars, the true focal point of our Band Of Merry Men, were of only the best quality. Stogie Night members exchanged different brands, tried new and intriguing tobacco blends, and shared cigar sources, as we sipped, puffed, and chatted through the fragrant wafting smoke. We ended the night with a toast and a round of handshakes.

November 2008

Having heard the old adage that time heals all wounds, the relieved Stogie Night crew got word a couple of days after the event, that the great city of Boston had given the Cigar Bars a ten year reprieve on the smoking ban, thereby staying the execution of Stanzi Di Sigari. That being said, Stogie Night lives to smoke another day, enjoying the freedom of a fine cigar with friends for at least another decade. We hope to see you at the next event in early February 2009.
